FilmTrain: Guidelines for Applications

Target Group

FilmTrain specifically aims at the following target groups:

  • People who plan to start up a small media production company or who already work as freelance television or multimedia authors and producers in Schleswig-Holstein or the region of Fyns Amt and want to improve their production skills.
  • University graduates that have undergone technical and/or artistic media training but lack production skills and experience.

Selection of participants

  • There will be six Danish and six German participants.
  • The participants are selected based on previous media experience and on their project proposals.
  • The participants apply for admission with a project proposal. The project must be of such nature that it can be completed within the specified financial and time constraints.

Who should apply?

  • People who aim to work primarily as a filmmaker / producer.
  • People who plan to start up a tv / film and media production company.

Who should not apply?

  • People who aim to work primarily in a technical function within the filmmaking / multimedia production process.

Cost

The cost to participate will be 400 Euro for the entire 24 months programme. Participants must assure that they will participate in all seminars and continue the programme throughout the entire 24 months period.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on the following selection criteria:

  • Previous experience in the media industry.
  • Quality of the proposed media project.

Applications must be submitted in English language and must include all of the following items:

  1. CV - curriculum vitae (no more than 1 page)
  2. Description of previous experience in the media industry (no more than 1 page)
  3. Three samples of previous work (in case of film no more than 5 minutes each) with a description attached that details in which function the applicant has participated in each project.
  4. Motivation to participate in the FILMTRAIN programme (no more than 1 page)
  5. Description of proposed media project (3 pages as specified below)

Description of the proposed media project

What type of media projects are suitable?

  • The proposed media projects are to be of a factual nature (no fiction, no animation). They can be either a film or a multimedia project.

Specifications for film projects:

  • Proposed films should fit a standard 26-28 minute television slot (reportage style or narrative documentary film).
  • All films will be shot on DV (digital video) equipment.
  • Shooting locations must be located either in Schleswig-Holstein (preferably the K.E.R.N.-region) or within the region of Fyns Amt.
  • It must be possible to complete the proposed film with very limited funds as only the cost of shooting materials and limited travel expenditures will be covered through the FilmTrain programme.
  • It must be possible to shoot, edit and postproduce the films between April - November 2005.
  • All films will be shot on DV (digital video) equipment.

Specifications for multimedia projects:

  • Multimedia projects can include everything from internet tv to dvd production.
  • Multimedia projects must contain film elements of a factual nature.
  • It must be possible to produce the project between April - November 2005.

Project descriptions must follow the following schedule:

  1. Content: What is the film / multimedia project about?
  2. Access: Which access do you have to key characters of the story?
  3. Dramatic structure: How will the story be told?
  4. Visual approach: How will visual means be used to tell the story?
  5. Target group: Who will be interested in this film / multimedia project and f or what reason?
  6. Motivation: Why do you want to make this film / multimedia project?
  7. Exploitation: How could the film / multimedia project be commercially and non-commercially exploited?
  8. For film projects: How could multimedia techniques be used in the secondary exploitation of the film?
  9. For multimedia projects: Which role will film play within the multimedia project?

The project description should not exceed 2500 words.
